Education System in Malaysia

Malaysia’s diverse education system provides you with flexible choices to pursue your desired field of study. Higher education in Malaysia covers certificate, diploma, undergraduate levels as well as postgraduate studies.
Public and Private universities and colleges offer excellent educational courses and programmes. Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in Malaysia can be grouped into two major categories:

Private Higher Education Institutions:
Private universities and colleges rely on corporate investment, alumni and student funding under the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996 to sustain their operations. Some of these institutions collaborate with reputable foreign universities to jointly award degree qualifications.

Public Higher Education Institutions:
Public universities and colleges are government-funded higher education institutions under the Ministry of Higher Education. These institutions provide quality education to students in Malaysia and are categorized into 3 major groups; Research Universities, Focused Universities and Comprehensive Universities.

Malaysia Scholarships

The Ministry of Higher Education provides 3 scholarship programmes to international students to pursue advanced academic studies in Malaysia. The scholarships are as follows:-

  • Malaysian International Scholarship (MIS)
  • Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP)
  • The Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCPA) ASEAN Masters Scholarship

Student Visa

Studying abroad may be one of the most beneficial experiences for a student. To study in Malaysia you will need to apply for admission to an institution and a student visa from the Malaysian government.

Documents Required for Visa Processing:

  • All pages of the passport including the cover pages are required (in colour).
  • Pre-arrival Medical Examination Report
  • Telegraphic Transfer (TT) receipt of payment
  • A copy of white back ground photo (Your photos must be professionally printed and 45 millimetres (mm) high x 35mm wide. Please do not use photos that have been cut down from larger pictures.)
  • Additional documents needed for students transferring from another higher education institution (college or university) in Malaysia:

* The Malaysian Immigration Department charges all students a fee of RM60 per year for student passes. Additionally, students who come from countries where entry visas into Malaysia are required will need to pay for an entry visa in Malaysia. The fees for entry visas vary.
